Welcome! Considering a trip along the Cassiar Highway to enjoy the natural beauty of northern British Columbia and Southeast Alaska? If you are, you will not be disappointed! Hyder, Alaska and Stewart, B.C. are some of the North's best kept secrets! The small communities of Hyder, AK and Stewart B.C. sit nestled together at the end of the long glacier carved fjord known as Portland Canal. British Columbia's "Great Northern Route" via the Cassiar Highway (Highway 37) connects to these communities, passing through some of the most breathtaking scenery anywhere. It is said that the Hyder / Stewart area is easily the best place to see glaciers up-close on the entire North American continent. Hyder Base Camp Hostel is one of the few facilities of its kind along the Cassiar Highway route. Our hostel was established in order to provide affordable shelter to travelers, and on the philosophy of gaining a greater understanding for people, places and cultures through hostelling. Hyder Base Camp Hostel is along the lines of a wilderness or remote hostel, as its provides the basic essentials. It also serves as an excellent safe alternative when bear activity is high and camping is not an option, or during wet weather. We are currently in the process of adding additional cabins, bunks, and on site facilities.
